Seven winter car care tips for your Subaru

There's no way around it -- winter is coming to the greater Boston area. The certified Subaru service center here at CitySide Subaru has the tips to get your prepping for the drop in temperatures.

  1. Keep up with your car's routine oil and filter change schedule as outlined in your owner's manual, and old oil and a worn filter can do damage to the engine year-round.
  2. Rough idling and hard starts are red flags about your vehicle's health, so be sure to have any related repairs taken care of before winter hits.
  3. Check the tire depth and tire wear, and replace damaged tires or, better yet, replace all four with winter tires for optimum traction on snow, slush, and ice.
  4. Have the battery checked, as a cold snap can exasperate a problem.
  5. A spongy brake pedal, a long stopping distance, and grinding noise while braking are all signs that the braking system needs to be inspected.
  6. Keep an emergency kit in your car at all times, packed with flares, batteries, food, and blankets
  7. Replace wipers with rubber-clad, winter-specific blades
